March is Women’s History Month, and we are celebrating with the three art displays and one exhibit. You will find women who have had an impact on the world, women as connections to nature, and the story of one woman who became a trailblazer for women in the legal field.
Tess Nguyen is the artist featured in the Gallery this month. She has beautiful colored pencil and watercolor pieces that feature animals, Viet Nam, and her Influential Women of the World series. Tess has also shared what her inspiration was for each of her pieces. You can also find Tess’s artwork throughout Janesville in locations like the climbing wall at Camden Playground. Watch her Meet the Artist interview to learn more about what inspires her.
In the Fireplace Room, we have the artwork of Devin Schuyler. Her pieces are large and bold with a strong female connection to the natural world. She was inspired by The Seven Virtues and other masterpieces by Italian artists that she saw while on a trip to Italy. To learn more about Devin and how she creates her artwork, watch her Meet the Artist interview.
Finally, on the River Wall, we have the mixed media art of Aaliyah Hatcher. Her artwork covers a variety of themes and topics. She uses mixed media to create layers and “explore the internal landscape of overthinking, anxiety, and depression.” You can read Aaliyah’s artist statement at the entrance to the Fireplace Room to learn more about her process in creating her artwork and watch her Meet the Artist interview.
Also, in the Gallery, we have an exhibit about Lavinia Goodell who was the first women licensed to practice law in the state of Wisconsin. The exhibit is on loan from Nancy Kopp, a retired Wisconsin Supreme Court Commissioner. This exhibit is also in partnership with the America 250 - Rock County program about Lavinia Goodell that will happen here at the library on Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m.
Art is available for viewing during regular library hours and can be found throughout the building. Viewers are encouraged to leave written comments for the artists in the binder located in the Fireplace Room.
Thank you all three artists for sharing their artwork with the staff and public at HPL. Special thanks to Kelly Hausknecht and JATV Media Services for the Meet the Artist interviews that allow us to learn more about the artists, their inspirations, and their techniques.
