Array of Media in August Exhibits

In August, you will find a wide array of artwork in the library, including woodcarvings by members of the Rock River Valley Woodcarvers, vintage black and white photographs by R. Alan Luckett, and Staedtler marker drawings by Leo Bird.

Leo Bird tells stories with his drawings and the narrative that he includes with each drawing. The stories are about fitting in, building character, and other true stories from his experiences. Leo is an artist with autism who has exhibited his art in a variety of locations since 2021. He also does presentations about his art and how it has helped him to express himself. Leo's Staedtler marker drawings can be found in both the Gallery and on the River Wall. Read Leo's Meet the Artist interview here.

In 1988, at the age of 19, R. Alan Luckett, Director of JATV Media, had the opportunity to travel to travel to Denmark and Russia with his sister and parents when his sister, a member of the Lyn Knight Dance Studio of Valparaiso, Indiana, participated with the group in a dance exchange. Being an experienced photographer for the local Valparaiso newspaper, Alan was allowed to join the group in order to document the trip through photos, now on display in the Fireplace Room.

The Rock River Valley Woodcarvers will have their talents displayed in the 360 Display Case near the Fireplace Room. You can also visit with the members of the Rock River Valley Woodcarvers each month on the first Saturday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Atrium.

Art is available for viewing during regular library hours and can be found throughout the library. Viewers are encouraged to leave written comments for the artists in the binder located in the Fireplace Room. Special thanks to Teresa Nguyen and JATV Media Services for the interviews that let us learn more about the artists and their inspirations.
