November is National Native American Heritage Month and the photography exhibit in the display case highlights this month-long awareness with photos of Native American sacred sites in the Midwest. The natural world and other topics are featured in the artwork in the Fireplace Room and on the River Wall.
Kim Hoholek explored Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, and Indiana to get the beautiful photos of Native American sacred sites including Pipestone National Monument and Dignity of Earth and Sky statue. This is Kim's fourth photography exhibit of Native American themes to help us celebrate Native American Heritage Month. She works with the Indigenous communities to build a relationship of respect and to help share the things she has learned from Native American elders. Kim's exhibit is full of stunning photos and resources for learning more about the Indigenous cultures in the Midwest. You can learn more about Kim's photography and journey to learn more of the Native American teachings by watching her Meet the Artist interview or reading this article from The Gazette.
Lily Jacob has her art exhibit in the Fireplace Room. Lily is a young person who has been encouraged by her family, friends, and teachers to continue exploring with her art. She uses a variety of media in order to capture the textures and colors of her favorite topic--nature. Her techniques for creating landscapes and other scenes from nature take the viewer with her to the special places in each of her paintings and drawings.
We are fortunate to have the artwork by Clarice Chicks on exhibit for another month. If you missed seeing her watercolors and pencil drawings last month, please be sure to stop in this month to see them. Clarice Chicks was a well-known and much-loved artist in the Rock County area. Her artwork can be found on the River Wall. To learn more about Clarice and her artistic abilities, you can watch the Meet the Artist interview with her daughter, Lugene Chicks, here: Meet the Artist: Clarice Chicks.
Art is available for viewing during regular library hours. Viewers are encouraged to leave written comments for the artists in the binder located in the Fireplace Room. Special thanks to Teresa Nguyen and JATV Media Services for the Meet the Artist interviews that let us learn more about the artists and their inspirations.
