HPL Videophiles: Books to Movies to Books

Welcome to HPL's film and television blog, highlighting staff-recommended movies or television.

In May, we discussed how many TV Shows are based on books, and how many TV show companions and memoirs that Hedberg Public Library has on the shelf in addition to the shows and the books on which they're based.

This month, we're looking at a couple of the plethora of movies that are "based upon the novel by...," and also some of the behind-the-scenes books that HPL has.

Emma

If you love Jane Austen's Emma, about a meddling young woman in Regency England of whom Austen said, "I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like," try the 1996 Gwyneth Paltrow adaptation and/or the 2020 Anya Taylor-Joy version! Contrary to Austen's possible expectations, many consider Emma to be the author's greatest work.

Marvel Cinematic Universe

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is arguably the most popular film series in history, with films such as Iron Man, The Avengers, and Black Panther. All of them were based on comic books, and HPL carries many of them in bound graphic novels.

In addition, we have several books about the movies. The massive two-volume The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is a must-read for the biggest MCU fans, as it goes behind the scenes of all nineteen films in the first ten years of the MCU, from the first Iron Man film through Spider-Man: Far From Home.

These are just a couple of the items featured on a Books to Movies to Books display that you'll find at the library in August. Stop by, check some out, and let us know your favorites! We hope this expands your enjoyment of your favorite films and books!
