To celebrate National Library Card Sign-Up Month, Hedberg Public Library hosted our fourth annual Teacher Open House on Thursday, September 11. This successful partnership with the School District of Janesville allows public school teachers to earn professional development credit if they register with the District. It is also open to all Pre-K to grade 12 teachers outside of the School District of Janesville, including homeschooling families, to attend.
After picking up their Library Passport at the Welcome Table, teachers visited tables scattered throughout the library to talk with staff about services and materials available in the Children’s Room, Teen Central, on the Bookmobile, in the Janesville and Wisconsin Rooms, and electronically. The Friends of Hedberg Public Library provided a special discounted membership to teachers during the event. One station was devoted to signing up teachers for Teacher Cards, which allow for longer check-outs for materials used in the classroom. Water, packaged snacks, and free children’s and young adult books were available for the teachers as they made the circuit around the library.
This year, 57 teachers attended and at least 20 new Teacher Cards were issued. Teachers continue to let us know how much they enjoy the event, and those who are already regular library users let us know that they learn something new about what the library has to offer every year at the Teacher Open House.
