Renew and Reserve Materials

Renew Materials
Not quite finished with that last chapter? Most materials may be renewed twice, giving you a few more weeks to watch all those movies or read those final pages. Items labeled "New" may be renewed only once.

The following items may not be renewed:

  • Materials for which others have placed holds
  • Children's holiday material
  • Jackpot items
  • Materials on loan from other libraries
  • Teacher's big books
  • Book Club in a Bag

Materials may be renewed four ways:

  • At the Catalog Computers in the library
  • At the Checkout Desk, Information Desk or Children's Desk
  • By calling the library at 608-758-6600.
PLEASE NOTE: We will no longer be offering an Automated Account Inforamtion and Renewal System.
  • By visiting your online account

Renewing an overdue item will not erase the accrued fine, but you can avoid the fine if you renew the material before it's due.

Telephone or e-mail notices inform patrons of overdue items. NOTE: Telephone notices will appear on the caller ID as "Lake Shores Library System." Notices are mailed to patrons who cannot be reached by e-mail or phone.

Reserve Materials
Is what you're looking for already being enjoyed by someone else? Be next in line to check it out after it's returned!

Holds may be placed on titles listed in the library's computer catalog that are checked out and not currently available. You may have up to 35 holds at any given time and can place your own holds at any public terminal or by visiting your online account. If you're not sure how to reserve a book, Information Desk staff will be happy to help.

Notification of holds ready for pickup is made by phone or e-mail. Sign up for notices at Checkout. A notice is mailed to patrons who cannot be reached by phone or e-mail. To preserve patron confidentiality, the phone call does not list the particular item on hold.

Self Pick-Up Holds
You can now pick up your own holds and check them out using one of our convenient Self-Check stations!

To search for your holds, please look for your Hold I.D., which is the first three letters of your last name, and the last four digits of your library card barcode number. For example, if Ima Patron's card number ends in 5555, her Hold I.D. would be PAT5555.

Please note: you must bring your library card (or the card that placed the hold) with you in order to check out your reserved item. Transferring holds to another card is not possible.

Reserved HPL items will be held for ten days (hold time for items reserved from other ALS libraries varies by library). You may cancel holds or delay notification by making them inactive on any library catalog computer or by visiting your online account.
