School Library Cards
Hedberg Public Library offers school library cards as a service to Janesville preschools, licensed daycare centers and public and private schools serving students in grades K-12. HPL issues these special cards in care of a school's librarian, school principal or preschool director. School personnel then use the card when classroom projects call for materials beyond the school's media center scope.
How do I obtain a card?
One person at your institution, usually the media specialist or center director, registers for the school card using the form available from Hedberg Public Library. That person assumes responsibility for its use. The form must be signed by the principal or preschool director. Each school can have up to six cards. The applicant may authorize other employees to use the cards and should keep track of all cards given out. Interested employees should check with their media specialist, principal or director.
Whose name is on the card?
All cards will be issued in the school's name. HPL will mail notices of holds and overdue items to the media specialist, principal or director.
How long may I keep items checked out on this card?
Most books with a regular three-week checkout period will be checked out to the school initially for six weeks. Other formats, such as DVDs and CD-ROMs, have the same loan period as other patrons receive.
May I renew these materials?
Books checked out for six weeks may be renewed once. Materials with shorter loan periods, such as regular (not new) DVDs, may be renewed two times if no other patron has placed a hold on them. Renew materials through the automated renewal line by calling at 758-6614 or visiting your account page on RockCat. The library card number is required to renew items.
Is the school card subject to any restrictions?
The number of items you can check out from certain collections is limited to the following:
- 6 children's holiday books
- 15 DVDs
Will I be fined for overdue materials?
HPL does not charge fines for materials checked out on school cards and returned late. However, this fine waiver does not apply to overdue materials checked out on a personal library card, even if the items are used for school or professional projects. In that case, the individual cardholder is responsible for any fines.
HPL may revoke a school's €śno fines€ť status on all cards for the rest of the year if the school is issued three or more notices for overdue materials not returned. At the time the second notice is generated for one or more items, no additional materials may be borrowed on the school card until the late material has been returned. This policy applies to all notices received for all teacher cards issued to an individual school. The total of three notices applies whether your school has one card or six.
What if I remember returning the materials?
If you returned material for which an overdue notice is received, inform your school librarian, principal or director. That person should phone 758-6582 to explain the problem. A search will be initiated for the item, and the problem will be cleared as soon as it is found. We also ask that you continue to search for it.
