About RFID (Radio Frequency Identification)

The Basics
RFID is HPL's new system for check-in and checkout that allows us to track library items for materials management, organization and security purposes. The new system:

  • improves customer service by providing easy-to-use self-check stations.
  • allows patrons to self-check all library materials, including DVDs and DVD kits!
  • clears your account immediately of returned items, eliminating the need for a
    grace period.
  • reduces check-in errors.
  • gets items back on the shelves faster - which means you can check them out sooner!
  • shortens lines by providing a Account Services station dedicated to new and replacement cards, fees and other account questions. You may not check-out at this station.
  • reduces time spent by staff checking in items, allowing them to spend more time on programs and patron services.

RFID FAQs
Answers to many of your frequently asked questions and concerns.

Do I need to do anything differently?
To make the most of our new system, please remember to:

  • always bring your library card - and be sure it’s in good condition.
  • inspect your items before checking out to be sure they contain all the necessary pieces.
  • ask staff if you have any questions - we are here to help!

Does this new system mean you are losing staff?
Not at all. The new technology simply allows our staff to use their time in different areas
to better serve you!

Do I have to use the self-check stations to check out?
No. There is currently a Full-Service Checkout station. However, we encourage you to use
self-checks. They are quick and easy - and staff is available to show you how to use them if it's your first time.

I don't like self-checks because I miss talking with staff.
We believe our new self-checks will allow our staff even more time to assist patrons in other ways. And you are always welcome to stop and say hello to your favorite people at HPL before and after checking out!

Why do I have to wait in line to check my items in?
During our high volume hours, or on program days, there may be a short wait to return your items. But, with the new self-checks, you'll save a whole lot of time on your way out! And remember, you are always welcome to use our outdoor return slots or our remote boxes on your way to the library if you'd like to avoid a possible line for check-in.

Will there always be just one check-in point?
Our goal is to introduce another check-in station next year.
